Plenary | Gender Equality | Development
This week, MEPs take part in a plenary session with debates and votes on a number of different issues, including consumer rights, media freedom, fundamental rights, and the Polish Constitutional Tribunal ruling on abortion rights. On Tuesday, the European Commission is expected to adopt the EU Action Plan on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in External Relations for 2021-2025.
This Thursday, from 14:00-15:00 (CEST), the European Movement International in partnership with the European Investment Bank will hold an online event with Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, on what the EU is doing to support the transition to a green economy. European Parliament
In this week’s plenary, MEPs will debate ways to boost sustainability by granting EU consumers a “right to repair” and by tackling practices that intentionally shorten the lifetime of products. Moreover, MEPs will debate ways to strengthen media freedom by enhancing the protection of journalists. On Tuesday, MEPs will debate the deterioration of fundamental rights and EU values, and on Wednesday, Parliament will hold a debate with Commission President von der Leyen and the German Presidency ahead of the next EU Summit on 10-12 December. On Thursday, MEPs are expected to have an official opinion on the ruling of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal on abortion rights in the country.

On Tuesday, the College will meet and is expected to adopt three action plans: on gender equality and women empowerment in external relations for 2021-2025; on integration and inclusion; and on intellectual property. Moreover, the Commission will also launch its strategy for a pharmaceutical Europe. On Wednesday, Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, in charge of the European Green Deal, will speak with climate activists Greta Thunberg, Luisa Neubauer, Adelaide Charlier and Anuna De Wever.

On Monday, Development Ministers will meet in the context of the Foreign Affairs Council to discuss debt relief and investments and their link with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Furthermore, the agenda foresees a discussion on how to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all external action, in light of the forthcoming Join Communication on the EU Gender Action Plan. On Friday, Research Ministers will hold an informal exchange of views on the investment targets for research and development proposed by the Commission.
