John,

On November 15, nearly 70,000 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in our country.

NPR reports that these numbers surpass the highs of the spring and summer surges. “They’re double the numbers hospitalized as of late September.”

Hope is on the horizon: COVID-19 vaccines are in development, with two of them already proving to be over 90% effective. But they’re not likely to be widely released to the public for at least a few months, meaning that the winter will likely be as dangerous as experts like Dr. Fauci predicted. With Trump blocking Biden’s transition team at every turn, there’s no indication that the country’s coronavirus response is going to improve anytime soon.

As hospitals are overwhelmed with new patients, frontline health care workers bear the burden, working tirelessly to save lives while risking their own. Trump’s failure to provide sufficient PPE and protections for hospital workers will impact women in particular, with 76% of healthcare jobs held by women according to the US Census Bureau.
