Friend -- In a democracy, the candidate with the most votes should win the election.
This presidential election wasn’t even close -- Joe Biden currently has almost six million more votes than Donald Trump -- but still, the Electoral College gave Trump an unfair advantage.
The Electoral College -- like gerrymandering -- dilutes the power of some voters while elevating others. Joe Biden won this presidential election fair and square through the Electoral College -- but if we’re going to save our democracy moving forward and ensure all votes have equal weight, we’ll need to overhaul this outdated system once and for all.
After Election Day, A.G. Holder said: “One thing is clear: it’s time to get rid of the Electoral College.” Add your name to our petition today if you agree with A.G. Holder: it’s time for the Electoral College to go!
If the election was decided by the popular vote, results would not have been delayed -- or determined -- by a handful of states.
In the last three decades, Republicans have only won the popular vote once -- yet Republican presidents have served three terms. This echoes what we see in gerrymandered states like Ohio, where Republican state legislators win far more seats than would be proportional to the statewide popular vote.
Any way you slice it, one party is depending on systems that suppress the will of the majority to maintain power. It’s time to abolish the Electoral College, add your name to our petition to demand we end it once and for all.
Thanks for stepping up,
The AOTL Team
