Friend --
The Durham People’s Alliance joins the Durham Association of
Educators and Durham For All in calling on the Board of County
Commissioners to approve a base $15 per hour wage for all Durham
Public School (DPS) workers.
Please e-mail county commissioners before Monday, November 3rd
urging them to provide DPS the funding needed to embark on this
endeavor.
PA has a long history of advocating for living wages in
Durham as a matter of economic justice. This work goes back to 1997
when PA helped to secure passage of the first municipal living wage
ordinance in NC by the Durham City Council. Since then,
we’ve:
- worked with community partners to expand living wage ordinances to
Durham County and to Durham Public Schools,
- advocated successfully to align our local living wage standards
with the $15 called for by the Fight for $15 and other union partners,
and
- promoted the inclusion of all types of staff under these living
wage ordinances.
DPS classified staff—our bus drivers, custodians, child nutrition
workers, instructional assistants, receptionists, and more—are the
very last group of public employees in Durham County who do not earn
at least $15 per hour. Most of these workers are people of color and
many of them are women. Economic and racial justice demand that these
workers earn a living wage so that they can meet their households’
basic needs and achieve greater financial security.
The final meeting of the current Board of County Commissioners is
next Monday, November 23. At this meeting, the BOCC will have an
opportunity to increase the wages of all DPS classified staff to at
least $15/hour.
Please contact the members of the Board of County Commissioners
immediately at let them know that all public employees in Durham –
including all DPS classified staff – should be paid a living wage.
Email the BOCC today to demand $15 per hour for DPS frontline
workers!
