Hi friend --

Washington Post: “In an unusually caustic and politically tinged speech, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. told a conservative legal group that liberals posed a growing threat to religious liberty and free speech.”

That’s right: perhaps feeling newly-emboldened by the Supreme Court’s now 6-3 conservative majority, Justice Alito decided he’d climb down from the bench and just talk shop with some fellow partisan hacks. Some of his more disturbing statements?

Alito bemoaned LGBTQ+ equality, complaining it is now “bigotry” to say that “marriage is a union between one man and one woman.” He also accused liberals of being on the wrong side of “culture wars,” and even warned that progressives were posing a threat to freedom of speech.

That fact that Alito felt comfortable speaking so freely makes us feel good about the future of the First Amendment. And we’re happy that President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris don’t share Alito’s views -- having two champions for progress and LGBTQ+ equality in the White House will go a long way toward protecting Americans from the fallout of the far-right’s “culture wars.”

But it’s incredibly disturbing that a sitting U.S. Supreme Court justice has such regressive, anti-LGBTQ+ views -- and that he felt so emboldened as to share them. Donald Trump gave Alito three new allies on the bench: Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. When you add Justice Clarence Thomas and Chief Justice John Roberts, you get a rock-solid 6-3 conservative majority that will shape the future of our country for years to come.

We want to do everything we can to push back against the terrible decisions we know SCOTUS is about to send our way. Marriage equality, the Affordable Care Act, the right to choose, and more are all in harm’s way -- especially now that a sitting justice has confirmed he views there being a “war” between conservatives and liberals.

You know how much power the Supreme Court wields -- and how relatively helpless liberals are on the bench, especially now that Justice Ginsburg is no longer with us to object to conservantive rule with her famous dissents. We must be the ones to dissent against conserative ideology, but in order for our voices to be heard, we must stand together.
