We thank God for all those working to combat the virus and its effects – both nationally and locally. Sadly, many churches have been forced to close their buildings when they most need to be open. Please pray that they will reopen swiftly and not be required to close again.

Coronavirus has shut church doors for a time. There are other threats to religious liberty that could have longer-lasting effects. Proposals to tackle ‘hate speech’ and promote ‘equality’ could be used to restrict Christian teaching in churches, in schools and in the home. Prayer, pastoral care and preaching are also being targeted by LGBT activists trying to class them as ‘conversion therapy’.

Many people are living in fear of COVID-19. As Christians, we can demonstrate to a fearful nation the peace and hope that we have in the Gospel. We need to pray that gospel freedom will be protected, that God will bring repentance and revival to the UK, and above all that he will use these challenging days for the glory of his name.

Thank you for all your support.

Week of Prayer: Autumn 2020

29 Nov - 5 Dec

Week of Prayer

Sunday

Society

Our secular society is desperate to move people away from God’s good instructions for his world.

“…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” Matthew 5:16

Please pray:

  • That our nation will rediscover a reverent fear of God;
  • For all those working to treat and care for patients with coronavirus;
  • That Christians will bring God's comfort to those suffering because of the virus;
  • That Christians would resist secular thinking on moral issues;
  • For more Christians to speak and act with wisdom and courage in defence of biblical truth;
  • That God in his mercy will grant repentance and revival in the UK.

Monday

Those in authority

The authorities that exist have been established by God (Rom 13:1). They are God’s servants (v6). We should pray for them.

Pray “for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:2

Please pray:

  • For the Prime Minister and First Ministers as they seek to govern justly;
  • For wisdom for those leading the national and local response to coronavirus;
  • That MPs, Peers and the devolved assemblies will promote what is good and restrain evil;
  • For believers in public life, especially those working in politics, the civil service and the judiciary;
  • For God to raise up more people who follow Christ to positions of authority.

Tuesday

Marriage and family

Marriage’s unique commitment greatly benefits society. It is worthy of respect and protection.

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24

Please pray:

  • Giving thanks for the benefits that marriage brings to families and society;
  • With thanksgiving for the legal protections in place for those who disagree with same-sex marriage;
  • That England and NI won’t follow Wales and Scotland in criminalising parents for reasonable chastisement of their children;
  • That the institution of marriage will be held in greater honour throughout society.

Wednesday

Schools

Helpful new guidance reminds schools to be balanced when teaching controversial issues, and not to encourage children to question their biological sex.

“…Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them” Matthew 19:14

Please pray:

  • Giving thanks for the new Government guidance telling schools in England not to work with organisations or use materials that encourage children to believe they are transgender;
  • That Christian parents will exert a positive influence on their children’s schools;
  • For our education team and their complex work helping parents, pupils, teachers and governors across the UK.

Thursday

Sanctity of life

Abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia ignore the value of human life as being made in God’s image.

“…All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:16

Please pray:

  • Thanking God for the strong reaction against the blanket use of Do Not Resuscitate orders during the coronavirus outbreak;
  • That the temporary rules allowing abortions to take place without medical supervision will not be made permanent;
  • Giving thanks that the UK has strong laws against assisted suicide. Pray this will continue;
  • That lawmakers and wider society would see the unborn, the disabled, the elderly and the infirm as valuable human beings in need of protection.

Friday

Transgenderism

Radical transgender ideology is being increasingly challenged – and thankfully rejected.

“…male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

Please pray:

  • With thanksgiving that the Government has dropped plans to make it much easier for people in England and Wales to change legal sex. Pray that Scotland will follow suit;
  • That children around the UK will not be prescribed dangerous cross-sex hormones;
  • That Christians continue to show grace and truth to people struggling with gender confusion.

Saturday

Religious freedom

In the UK we enjoy many freedoms to express our Christian faith. We should give thanks for this but must not take them for granted.

“pray…that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ.” Colossians 4:3

Please pray:

  • With thanksgiving that Christians are free to proclaim the Gospel in the UK;
  • That churches would be able to remain open for public worship during any future lockdowns;
  • For our legal team in their work helping those in difficulty for their Christian beliefs;
  • That ‘hate speech’ laws will not be used to stop people sharing biblical truths;
  • That plans to ban ‘conversion therapy’ would not restrict prayer, pastoral care and preaching.
