The biggest legal threat to Donald Trump may not be the federal laws that he’s likely broken. It’s potential crimes committed in New York state.

This week, the District Attorney of Manhattan has subpoenaed the last eight years of Trump’s personal and business tax returns in an investigation into hush money payments made to Trump’s (alleged) former mistresses Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.[1]

Trump’s long-time accounting firm, Mazars USA, has said that it will “respect the legal process and fully comply with its legal obligations.”

But you and I know that Donald Trump will stop at nothing to keep his tax returns hidden from the American people. He’s already challenged a subpoena from a congressional committee seeking his tax returns. His Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has ordered the IRS to not comply with a congressional request for Trump’s tax returns that the IRS has no legal right to refuse. And Trump has sued to block a law in New York state requiring him to turn over his state tax returns if requested by a congressional committee.

It’s up to us to hold this president accountable to the American people and that starts with getting our hands on his tax returns.

Sign the petition to Mazars’s Chairman and CEO, Victor Wahba: Immediately comply with the Manhattan DA’s subpoena to hand over Trump’s personal and business tax returns. Don’t allow pressure and intimidation from Trump and the White House stop you from cooperating with state prosecutors.

Trump’s tax returns would shed light on years of alleged tax dodging, financial relationships with foreign governments that could be influencing U.S. foreign policy, and how the Trump-GOP tax scam has personally benefited Trump, his business and his family.
