This year, Giving Tuesday will fall on
December 1st!

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. Despite the hardships this year has brought, it has also shown us the importance of community solidarity and support.

Your support will allow us to continue reunifying families. So far we have helped over 60 migrants with our Familia Reunidas Program.

Your support will allow us to continue helping children receive the legal protection, love and care they deserve. Our Green Cards for Kids provides migrant children, many who were abandoned, with an attorney who is an expert at advocating for kids.

Your support will allow us to maintain a presence in the desert and mountains through our Water Drops. This year, even during COVID, our team went (almost) every weekend to leave water, clothes and food for migrants, saving countless lives.

Your support will allow us to help shelter directors in Tijuana feed and house migrants. This year alone we have provided many shelters with new appliances; such as washer, dryers, stoves, and refrigerators. We have funded a shelter COVID-19 expansion to ensure the safety of others when isolating and practicing social distancing. We also helped provide hundreds of face masks to maintain a safe and healthy community.

Your support also allows us to provide Day Laborers with personal hygiene products, face masks, hand sanitizers, fresh produce, snacks and neon t-shirts that help in the line of work they seek.

The results of the presidential election has reignited our hope, but we know that we collectively have A LOT of work ahead of us – and we need your help! Mark your calendars. 📅 🖤

** Water Drop
------------------------------------------------------------
Now that the weather is cooler, we can go out for even longer and farther than the summer had let us. Weather in the mountains has already dipped below freezing this week, with the desert temperature not too far behind that.

While this weekend will bring a little warmer weather, it will only be brief. As we move away from strictly warm/hot weather, we start to shift from not only wanting to help prevent dehydration, but also hypothermia. The supplies we leave out now are water gallons, pop-top canned food, socks, beanies, gloves, flannel shirts/thermal base layers. Donations of these items are greatly appreciated, along with sharing our social media posts. Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who has continued to show up on a regular basis. Thank you everyone for reaching out about volunteering and for your support and understanding during the pandemic. As soon as it’s safe for us to start taking larger groups, we will. Please stay tuned to our social media accounts and our weekly newsletter.

For any questions about Water Drops reach out to Water Drop Program Co-Director James Cordero at [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support!

** Shelter Aid
------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday we had the privilege of sitting down for a virtual meeting with Tijuana shelter directors. We wanted to ensure that all of their urgent needs were being taken to account and we wanted o thank them all for their tireless work and devotion in Tijuana. Despite their very busy schedules 14 directors were able to join our Executive Director, Board President, and office staff.

It was an emotional talk hearing about the hardships our migrant friends and families have had, with the added pressures and losses of the pandemic. Many of them have stopped receiving support completely from the government and other organizations, and rely solely on us. Directors have had to ensure so many new protocols and have made modifications to their shelters to keep everyone safe. This has drastically increased their work, as well as the need for new appliances, supplies, medical attention. Yet, they all remain so polite, grateful, and resilient.

Thanks to you, and your continued support, they are able to purchase groceries to feed migrant families, pay rent, utilities and purchase the tools they need to survive this pandemic. We are so impressed how this amazing group of individuals has adapted, some of them building expansions, teaching workshops, providing legal representation, and even cultivating gardens to help this vulnerable population that is so dear to us.

All of these amazing acts of love are possible because of their dedication, and because of all of YOU. GRACIAS!

3,175 kilometers with problems to solve

By Leticia Roa Nixon
The Chicago newspaper "El Tribuno del Pueblo" sponsored the work of 27 participants to hold five virtual panels on the policies of the United States government from August to October. These affect asylum seekers, the construction of the border wall and its effect on local communities, the way in which civil society, in the respective countries, upholds the rights of migrants despite the arduous working conditions and continued militarization in border communities. "Children have been separated from their parents and have died in the custody of the Border Patrol, the border wall has desecrated the ancestral lands of indigenous peoples and these issues must be included in the dialogue about the leadership of this country"Laura García, editor of "El Tribuno del Pueblo", stated firmly.

Judge Bars Immigration Arrests at San Diego’s Federal Courthouse

U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw granted a temporary restraining order this week barring the Department of Homeland Security from making immigration arrests at the federal courthouses in San Diego and El Centro.

By Maya Srikrishnan

"U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw granted ** a temporary restraining order ([link removed][UNIQID])
this week barring the Department of Homeland Security from making immigration arrests at the federal courthouses in San Diego and El Centro.

The decision stemmed from a complaint filed in October challenging DHS’s practice of attending hearings for people who were charged with misdemeanors for entering the country illegally, but had posted bond and were not in custody prior to the hearing, and arresting those people at the conclusion of each case, regardless of the outcome.

The complaint was filed by attorneys on behalf of several individuals with active illegal entry cases, who “have seen immigration officers waiting in court presumably to arrest him/her at prior court appearances if the case had concluded, and believes that he/she faces likely civil immigration arrest in court following conclusion of the criminal prosecution.”

In ruling against immigration officials, Sabraw wrote that court should be “a sanctuary — a place where parties and witnesses must be free from interference and intimidation to present their claims and defenses.”

Truth Act forum draws hundreds of immigration advocates

Hundreds of immigration advocates spoke out against San Diego County's sheriff's office report of transferring inmates to federal immigration authorities.

By Abbie Alford

"SAN DIEGO — Harsh words for the San Diego Sheriff and the department from immigration advocates.

The third annual ** Truth Act forum ([link removed][UNIQID])
was held virtually Tuesday night with county board of supervisors and it was the first forum held in the evening to allow more opportunity for community input.

There were 113 speakers signed up to call in and most called on Sheriff Bill Gore to stop transferring inmates to Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE)."

ICE is putting people who were released due to COVID-19 concerns back in jails. The decision is dangerous as the country enters another wave

"The United States is well into its third wave of cases. With the country reporting more than 100,000 cases a day and more than a 1,000 deaths per day, the pandemic is expected to be much ** worse ([link removed][UNIQID])
than it was in the spring.

People who are incarcerated are especially vulnerable, given their tightly packed facilities, poor living conditions and abysmal access to medical care. Yet despite the increasing danger, calls to decarcerate and free people have gone down significantly and policymakers have seemingly moved on."

Revised U.S. citizenship test requires more correct answers to pass

By Celine Castronuovo

"U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on Friday announced a new naturalization test with more than two dozen additional questions and a higher number of correct answers required to receive a passing score.

The agency ** announced that the updated oral exam ([link removed][UNIQID])
, set to go into effect Dec. 1, will include 128 questions about American government and history, compared to the 100 included in the previous version from 2008.

While the current test requires individuals to answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly, the 2020 version has a requirement of 12 out of 20 correct answers to pass. "
