On Wednesday, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s policy of using the pandemic as an excuse to turn away migrant children seeking asylum at the border. This is great news, and it also raises pressure on how the Biden administration will approach the emergency border restrictions. People like us will be sure to hold them accountable for not only this but also for making our democracy more accessible to all.

With all eyes on the key Senate runoff elections in Georgia, attention is again turning to the Latino electorate. Right now, 377,000 Latinos are eligible to vote and 250,000 Latinos are registered in the state. They could easily prove to be the margin of victory—if effectively mobilized—but these next few months should also be seen as an opportunity to build grassroots power that goes well beyond Election Day. (If you live in Georgia, be sure to register online to vote by Monday, December 7.)

It’s no secret that our democracy has been under attack these past four years.

To reclaim some of the power we’ve lost and to create the change that people like us want to see in our democracy, Congress and our next administration must support the passage of the For the People Act (HR1). This is a once-in-a-generation democracy reform package that will clean up our political system, get big money out of politics, hold elected officials accountable for corruption, expand and protect voting rights, and create a democracy that values the voices of all Americans.
