The California legislature passed SB1 along party lines this month. This is a crucial bill for environment and labor protection, designed to push back against the Trump administration. Governor Newsom plans to veto it.
SB1 is the California Environmental, Public Health, and Workers Defense Act of 2019. It stipulates that “protections afforded to Californians under the federal environmental and labor laws and regulations as of January 2017, remain in place in the event that President Trump weakens or repeals any of those federal laws of regulations”.
That means that protections such as the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, and more would remain in effect for California - even if Trump’s administration guts these acts on the federal level. Which they have.
The bill faced major opposition from big agri-business and water agency interests. Now, Governor Newsom is threatening to side with the Trump Administration and some of his special interest donors and veto SB 1.
We cannot let that happen. It would be bad for California, bad for Newsom, and bad for the planet. Support California’s environment today and call Governor Newsom at 916-445-2841 to urge him to sign SB 1 when it gets to his desk.
Call Governor Newsom between 9am and 5pm at 916-445-2841 and tell him:
I urge Gov. Newsom to protect our environment and sign SB. 1.

Done calling? There’s a bill in the US Congress we would like Speaker Pelosi and Representative Speier to endorse. Call them and ask them to support HR 4300 - a bill that authorizes HUD to provide housing opportunities to foster children.

Indivisible SF Spotlight
Are you ready for 2019 City elections? Our November Voting Guide for 2019 is ready! ISF has made several ballot proposition endorsements - check them out here.
Our #DefundHate event made a big splash! Last week, Indivisibles and other groups nationwide held actions and call-ins to ask our MoC’s to use the appropriations process to Defund Hate - to prevent taxpayer money from being used to harm immigrants. On Friday, we took to the streets for a rush-hour demonstration to raise the profile of the issue. We asked passersby to share their stories of immigration, border crossings or national origin. We passed out all of our flyers with instructions to call their representatives. We were even picked up in the news!
We wrote to a LOT of voters. At our last General meeting, we wrote 50 postcards to voters in Mississippi at the request of Indivisible Golden Triangle MS, and more than 70 letters to voters at our Pints & Postcards events! Election season is heating up - don’t miss out on your chance to contact voters nationwide!
Power of the Purse Campaign Update - We Delivered our Letter to our MoC’s offices in DC! Thanks to Herd on the Hill, Speaker Pelosi, Rep. Speier, and Senators Harris and Feinstein all have a letter in their inboxes… and their mailboxes. In this letter are listed our asks for the budget fight - and it came with 104 signatures of ISF members! Our member Bruce wrote an update on how the budget fight is going, and what we can expect in the latter half of this month. Read all about it on our blog.
Our latest meeting with Sen. Feinstein. We met with Senator Feinstein’s staff, detailing our PoP asks, especially those focused on defunding ICE and CBP. We were disappointed to learn that Senator Feinstein does not agree with us. She would rather allocate funds and have strong guardrails in place to ensure that money is spent as intended. We are skeptical of how the administration would spend such funds and will continue to insist that Congress not allocate any additional money to support Trump's cruel deportation machine. We won't stop.
