Our Executive Director, Leila Salazar-López, testified before Congress today on the status of Indigenous rights in the Amazon, speaking to the multiple threats against Indigenous peoples and the Amazon rainforest.
Alongside allied human rights organizations, Amazon Watch took this opportunity to urge bold congressional action for the protection of human rights and our climate.
In her testimony, Leila stated, “The most effective solution to protect the Amazon is to respect and uphold Indigenous rights and sovereignty, protect and defend lives and territories, and support and amplify Indigenous-led solutions for forest conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and regenerative local economies.”
Congress now knows that it must act with a sense of urgency to protect the Amazon, Indigenous peoples, and our climate. Read Leila's full statement and share her message!
