Firefighters union sounds alarm over "mass exodus" of fire paramedics

The union that represents firefighters and fire truck paramedics is sounding the alarm over a “mass exodus” of fire truck Primary Care Paramedics (Fire PCPs). In a letter to members, United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg (UFFW) President Alex Forrest said 70 Fire PCPs left the program in the last year — the majority over the last two months. This leaves the department with 320 Fire PCPs, he explained. Two hundred and forty are required to staff the department’s 40 medically equipped fire trucks.

New paramedic station downtown will help improve call response times

The Guelph Wellington Paramedic Service is moving a paramedic station to Downtown Guelph to improve its call times. Currently, the city is using a temporary post at 614 York Rd. which will be replaced by a newly-leased 5,000 sq/ft building located on the corner of Gordon Street and Fountain Street W., just west of the Guelph Police Headquarters.

Levis woman dies of cardiac arrest after ambulance gets turned around to respond to another call

Marcel Aubin said his wife of 50 years, Monique Labrecque, had been feeling unwell for several days before the night of her death on May 24. At 7:25 p.m., seeing her condition was getting worse, Aubin called 911. An ambulance arrived at their Lévis residence 20 minutes later. But before paramedics could evaluate her condition or even unpack their equipment, they were dispatched to another call.

It has been a busy weekend for one of the Ottawa Paramedic Services newest communications officers and her mentor, helping to deliver two babies by phone in less than 24 hours. The first delivery happened just after 5 p.m. Friday, when communications officer trainee Emma received a 911 call from a woman experiencing frequent contractions and signs of imminent delivery.

A pharmacist in Cape Breton is making sure residents of rural communities are receiving a flu shot this year. Michael Hatt, the owner and pharmacist at the Medicine Shoppe in Port Hawkesbury, N.S., converted an old ambulance he purchased on Kijiji into a mobile clinic. He uses it to travel to communities and businesses to deliver the flu shot.
