Almost 160 million people voted in the 2020 Election, which is the greatest number of Americans who have ever voted in one election. Advancement Project National Office is honored to have been on the ground to support organizations with their get out to vote (GOTV) efforts and advocate on behalf of voters. This how we showed up before, during, and after the election.

On October 31 at Parade to the Polls, a nationwide celebration of our power to vote, Advancement Project National Office Executive Director Judith Browne Dianis and other staff members engaged with voters who were participating in early voting in Miami Gardens, Florida. We worked with partner organizations on the ground throughout the east coast for Election 2020. While in Florida, Executive Director Judith Browne Dianis strategized with Florida Rights Restoration Coalition President Desmond Meade on future voter rights restoration work.

Election Day began early for Advancement Project National Office. Power and Democracy Program Director Jorge Vasquez and other staff members began poll tracking at 5:00 a.m. in Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania and Virginia. At 6:00 a.m., Executive Director Judith Browne Dianis and New Florida Majority Executive Director Andrea Mercado began canvassing local Florida neighborhoods to get people to the polls.

Across Virginia, we monitored long lines at polling sites. We talked to voters in Georgia and learned about the issues that most moved them, including the systemic inequality and racism in this country and reforming the healthcare system. In Pennsylvania, we partnered with Lehigh Valley Stands Up to give Pennsylvania voters resources to help them cast their ballot.

Late into election night, Executive Director Judith Browne Dianis and Florida Voter Protection Advocate Carolyn Thompson reviewed reports of voter suppression across Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Power and Democracy Program Director Jorge Vasquez virtually joined the Harvard Black Men’s Forum on election night to discuss what Advancement Project National Office was seeing at voting polls on the ground.

We joined Lehigh Valley Stands Up and other partner organizations in Pennsylvania to demand that every vote be counted. We also worked closely with New Georgia Project to ensure every vote was counted across the state of Georgia. Even when Election Day was over, the work on the ground continued. Executive Director Judith Browne Dianis co-hosted The Sip Hour on November 4 to offer analysis on the incoming election results.

While the votes have been counted and the will of the voters have been heard, our work at Advancement Project National Office continues. We are committed to continuing our work to protect voters’ rights.
