Hi John,

Like you, millions of women across the country celebrated a monumental win as they saw Kamala Harris accept her place as vice-president elect in her iconic white suit -- but other women of color who’ve broken barriers have grounded us with some advice: buckle up.

As POLITICO reports, “when you assume power, there are high expectations. You become, effectively, a one-woman band with a mandate to defy all the low expectations of you, your race and your gender.”

We saw these double standards throughout the campaign trail, where sexist memes ridiculed Harris’ former relationships, Republican men criticized her for being too strident and “monstrous” while willfully mispronouncing her name, and millions of Americans turned from Biden for having the “audacity” to pick a Black woman as his vice president.

These, like many of the attacks she has faced this year, have not deterred Harris, who boldly said that “while I will be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.” And we are determined to make that statement a reality.

We want to see women across this country elevated and properly represented in our leadership -- and that starts by supporting the women who have succeeded in breaking the glass ceiling. There is no space to go backwards, but we are running low on funds right when our support is needed most.

You know that Harris’ victory, while a moment of pride for women everywhere, dealt a significant blow for misogynists in this country -- and gave men, especially white men, a new target in public office. With your help today, we’ll send a resounding message that Harris and all the women who come after are not only here to stay but are here to lead our country forward in a way that the privileged men in office have failed to do. Please, will you donate anything you can now to drive our efforts forward?
