On Trans Day of Remembrance and Resilience, we both mourn and celebrate.

Dear Friend,

Every November 20th, on Trans Day of Remembrance and Resilience, I hold space in my heart for my trans and non-binary siblings killed simply because someone hated our very existence. But while I mourn, I celebrate our community, too—for our resilience, for surviving and thriving every day in the face of such bigotry.

My personal story is about resilience.

As a non-binary person living in Venezuela, I felt terrified and alone. I survived a life-threatening attack, which led me to seek asylum in the U.S. During my journey, so many individuals heard my story and said, “You deserve a chance.” It was that sense of solidarity and community that enabled me to be here today. And with the help of Immigration Equality, I am now free—to live openly, vote, and join the fight for justice.

Let’s come together for our trans and non-binary siblings who still need a lifeline. When all of us—every single one of us—care enough, we can save lives.

Contribute $112.00—in honor of 11/20—to support Immigration Equality’s live-saving work on behalf of our community. ([link removed])

When COVID-19 struck New York City, it was this same sense of community that inspired me—like so many others—to help. In Venezuela, I was a practicing physician, so I volunteered at a testing site in Queens. I witnessed countless acts of kindness and solidarity during an otherwise chaotic time. Now, we’re facing another COVID-19 surge, but I know our community will be on the frontlines once again to save all the lives we can.

It’s only when we act together, as a family of survivors and supporters, that we can transform this world for the next generation of trans and non-binary people. For me, using my skills as a doctor, and joining the Board of Immigration Equality, allowed me to be a part of that change. Now, I’m inviting you to join me.

I believe all people have the right to live openly and safely, without fear of violence and abuse. I know you do, too, Friend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for lifting up trans and non-binary people today.

Sincerely,

Ilon, Board Member and former client
