John,
It's become abundantly clear that COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon. It's up to all of us to do our part to protect our friends, family, neighbors, and ourselves right now to prevent further spread of this virus.
That's why today I issued a new executive order giving counties one week to create their own face covering protocol. If they fail to do so, they will be opted into a statewide face covering policy. I want counties to do what's best for residents, but we cannot beat this pandemic if we don't all wear masks.
After working with the Kansas Hospital Association, Chambers of Commerce, The Farm Bureau, and other stakeholder organizations, I wholeheartedly believe this is the best step forward for all of us. In addition to new face covering policies, I will also be restarting a biweekly call with county commissioners, local emergency managers, and the Legislature for COVID-19 updates.
I want to be clear: implementing these new facial covering policies is not a political statement. When we all wear facial coverings correctly, we drastically prevent the spread of COVID-19. This is what we need to do to remain healthy and ease the burden on our healthcare providers.
I did not come to this decision lightly. I have been working with experts and leaders from both parties, and we must move as quickly as possible and stand united to protect the lives of Kansans.
If you agree we need to put politics aside and protect the health and wellbeing of Kansans, add your name to urge your local leadership to swiftly adopt an adequate facial covering policy.
