Trump’s comments earlier this week that he’d welcome foreign influence on
his behalf in the next election should have every one of us – on all ends
of the political spectrum – worried.

It’s urgent that Congress acts to make sure it’s clear to candidates for
public office that foreign entities interfering in our elections is an
attack on our democracy and cooperating with those attacks, besides being
highly unethical and thoroughly unpatriotic (if not traitorous), could be
illegal.

That’s why it’s imperative that Congress pass the Foreign Influence
Reporting in Elections (FIRE) Act, a bill recently introduced by Senator
Warner which would require campaigns to report foreign attempts to
interfere in elections to the FBI and the FEC.

ensure foreign adversaries cannot continue to influence our elections>>

The Mueller report made clear that American elections are vulnerable to
outside interference and attacks by foreign entities, and after Trump’s
latest remarks the need for election monitoring and oversight clearly is
more dire than ever. Now that the Executive Branch has openly incentivized
foreign entities to repeat the attacks of 2016, it is up to Congress to
act quickly before we are too deep into the 2020 campaigns. According to a
recent poll, 84% of Americans-- including 75% of Republican voters-- would
support a bill of this nature, but Republicans in Congress have refused to
act on its passage.

It is imperative that a bill of this nature pass NOW before the 2020
election.
