We're 15 days out from Election Day. Here's the news that you'll want to know: (1) Trump campaign files for partial recount in Wisconsin and paid $3 million to cover the costs
(2) two more Georgia counties find previously un-tallied ballots during recount; the recount must be done by midnight tonight
(3) Nancy Pelosi gets Democrats' support to stay Speaker, reportedly will "likely be her last term" in the top spot
Trump campaign files for partial recount of Wisconsin and has paid $3 million to cover the costs. "The recounts in Milwaukee and Dane counties could begin as soon as Thursday and must be done by Dec. 1. Democrat Joe Biden received 577,455 votes in those two counties compared with 213,157 for Trump. Biden won statewide by 20,608 votes, based on canvassed results submitted by the counties." (Associated Press) • The Trump campaign filed for a partial recount in Wisconsin in two counties: Milwaukee and Dane. Milwaukee is the largest county in the state; Dane is "home to the liberal capital city of Madison and the flagship University of Wisconsin campus."
• The recount must be completed by Tuesday, December 1.
• The recount petition signed by President Trump (read it for yourself) said: "The Petitioners are informed and believe that mistakes and fraud were committed throughout the State of Wisconsin, including particularly in the City of Madison, the City of Milwaukee, and throughout Dane County and Milwaukee County in the counting and return of votes cast in the election for President of the United States."
• The Trump campaign paid $3 million to the Wisconsin Elections Commission for the recount. For comparison, a recount for the entire state would cost $8 million.
• Right now, Joe Biden has a lead of just 20,608 votes in Wisconsin. The state awards 10 Electoral College votes.
Two more Georgia counties find previously un-tallied ballots during recount. The recount must be done by midnight tonight. "A third batch of missed votes in Georgia has been found and tabulated, narrowing Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s lead over President Donald Trump in the state. An audit of the election in Georgia uncovered dozens of uncounted votes in the town of Between in Walton County. Election officials found 284 ballots that, once counted, netted Trump another 176 votes and cut slightly into Biden’s lead, according to the Walton Tribune." (Daily Wire)
• Fayette County had 2,755 previously un-tallied ballots found. In total, the new ballots reduced Joe Biden's lead by approximately 800 votes.
• Previously, more than 2,600 ballots that were not tallied in the final count were discovered in Georgia. The ballots were cast in Floyd County, which President Trump already had a major lead in over Joe Biden. In total, it will likely change the vote margin by 800 votes in favor of President Trump.
• An investigator from the Georgia Secretary of State's office is reportedly looking into the issue. (The Georgia Secretary of State is a Republican.)
• Georgia's Voting System Implementation Manager said at a press conference (emphasis our own): "The secretary, since this was such an amazing blunder and they had issues in August, would like to see that elections director in Floyd County step down from his position."
• The Floyd County GOP Chairman said: "It’s very concerning. But this doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue. I’m glad the audit revealed it, and it’s important that all votes are counted.”
And for background:
• Last week, Georgia announced a by-hand recount of the presidential race. That's because the state is very close: President Trump and Joe Biden are separated by approximately 14,000 votes out of nearly 5 million cast, and the Associated Press hasn't yet called the race.
• Although some counties have completed their counts already, the final results will be released all at once, with all counties and the final statewide vote total included.
• County recounts have been overseen by poll monitors from both major parties, the press, and some members of the public.
• The recount must be done by midnight tonight. The deadline for the state to certify its election results is this Friday.
• Georgia awards 16 Electoral College votes.
Nancy Pelosi gets Democrats' support to stay Speaker. It reportedly will "likely be her last term" in the top spot. "House Democrats nominated Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) to another term as House Speaker on Wednesday, with no other representative competing for the post, and she must now prevail in a floor vote in January to officially retain the gavel." (National Review) • Speaker Nancy Pelosi won House Democrats' support as their Speaker candidate for the next Congress, which begins in January 2021.
• As the Daily Caller reported: "This will likely be her last term, as she agreed with Democrats on a term limit for leadership positions in 2018."
• There have been reports of moderate Democrats considering a challenge to her. And, in 2019, 15 Democrats voted against her for Speaker.
• Given House Democrats' slim majority, Speaker Pelosi needs to unite the House Democrats to keep her leadership role. It seems likely that she will, but it's not a sure thing until the vote in January when the new Congress begins.
