Coming from the country recently identified as the single largest contributor of plastic waste in the world, it is our responsibility in the United States to start exporting effective policies and innovation, rather than polluting waste.
We recognize that successful change in Los Angeles can have a ripple effect, strengthening our ability to phase out harmful plastics in California and beyond. As Co-Chairs of the Reusable LA coalition, we drafted an ordinance that would drastically reduce the amount of single-use plastic of California’s takeout items. In collaboration with 25 organizations, we surveyed 50 local restaurants, partnering with UCLA students on the translation of surveys into Spanish, Vietnamese, and Tagalog and found an 88% interest to support a fee for disposables.
An important aspect of creating new laws is the reality of “by whom and for whom” laws are written. Far too often, the communities and industries that will be most impacted by policy change are not invited to shape and craft these solutions. We are proud to be a part of the Plastic-Free LA Coalition, which works on bringing together members of frontline, fenceline, and ocean-led organizations to work together to ensure policy is equitable and inclusive for all.
