Friend –
As we turn the page on one of the most dangerous administrations in this country's history, I want to thank you for what you did to help get to this point. Your support made it possible to face down these threats to civil liberties and civil rights. You helped us to send ACLU lawyers to court, legal observers to defend the rights of protestors, and organize online and in communities across Wisconsin and the whole country.
The ACLU invested more than ever in Wisconsin to defend the right to vote and to ensure that people could cast an informed vote. Here are some specifics about what your support made possible:
- We hired regional organizers in key parts of the state to reach populations most vulnerable to voter suppression. Our outreach efforts included mailers, billboards, door hangers, and other printed materials that you're used to seeing from us, but we also invested in a digital ad campaign that reached more than 300,000 voters in Wisconsin.
- We wanted voters who care about civil rights and liberties to help decide this election. So, we identified the ACLU issues that voters care about the most, then gave them the information they needed to act, covering topics like voting safely during the pandemic, and overcoming obstacles to voting such as Wisconsin’s Voter ID law.
- On Election Day, ACLU lawyers and observers also served in Wisconsin Election Protection, where we directly helped more than 500 people to make voting easier and more accessible to others.
These efforts helped turn out a record number of Wisconsin voters in 2020.
We now have new work. This election made our country’s deep divides clear, but we won’t turn away. If you felt troubled to see so many people vote for more of the attacks we’ve seen over the past four years, that is where the ACLU comes in. We have to address long-standing injustices against the most vulnerable Americans: immigrants and communities of color – especially Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people. We have to provide alternatives to our country’s cruel and wasteful system of mass incarceration. And we have to defend past victories – for freedom of choice, freedom of religion and belief, and protections from discrimination for the LGBTQ community – from new attacks.
ACLU Supporter, we’ve been through a lot over the past four years, and for however much of that time you’ve been with us, thank you. We hope we can count on you to be with us for what comes next.
Thanks for sticking with us,
Chris Ott
Executive Director, ACLU of Wisconsin
