Dear John,
Along with being on staff, I am a Ms. Foundation for Women donor. Here’s why...
I get salty about waste, especially wasted talent and squandered promise. Our society routinely ignores and under-resources brilliant, innovative leaders because of their gender and racial identity. It’s devastating. We need to do better.
The Ms. Foundation is committed to changing this pattern. Right now we are raising funds to make sure we can deliver on our commitment. I invite you to join me by making a gift to the Ms. Foundation’s “When Women Win” campaign to raise $100,000 before November 30. Your gift and mine will be used to support feminist leaders who are making the world better for the women, girls, and nonbinary people our society often leaves behind.
This year the Ms. Foundation released Pocket Change, a report about how women and girls of color are funded as nonprofit leaders. You can find it on our website. The data is sobering.
Nationally, women and girls of color receive half a percent of all philanthropic funding. That’s $5.48 a year for each woman or girl of color. Women and girls of color who live in the South receive less than half the national average, or $2.22 each. Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee report less than a 50¢ allocation per woman or girl of color each year.
For every Stacey Abrams or Gloria Steinem or Ai-Jen Poo, there are thousands of women who push for change all their lives with little recognition and even less financial investment. And yet many accomplish extraordinary victories. Can you imagine what it would be like if we could multiply Stacey and Gloria and Ai-Jen by thousands?
Please join me and make a gift to the When Women Win campaign right now. Thousands of amazing women are transforming their communities everyday. And, with only a fraction of each philanthropic penny to spend, they waste absolutely nothing. I love that.
In solidarity,
Ruth McFarlane
VP of Advancement, Ms. Foundation for Women
P.S. Join me by making a gift today.
