I wanted to share some more good news from the 2020 Rainbow Wave - and some analysis about what these historic wins mean (that's what Political Directors do best!). So without further delay: let's dive into our historic wins at the state legislative level!

Though we're still waiting for some results from Election Night 2020, it's safe to say that out LGBTQ state legislative candidates had a fantastic night. In fact, of our 205 victories, 115 of them were state legislative candidates! Trans and nonbinary people, who are some of the most underrepresented among LGBTQ elected officials, racked up huge wins. We nearly doubled the number of trans state legislators who will serve next year: from four to seven. LGBTQ people of color also gained remarkable ground at the state level, adding new LGBTQ voices in states like Delaware, Florida, Georgia, New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee (who elected its first out state legislators!) and more.

This is the latest update on which states added or held an LGBTQ state seat in 2020 (Alabama, Louisiana, Maryland and New Jersey didn't have races this year):

Two more reasons to enjoy these victories? We know that representation is power: having an LGBTQ voice in the room prioritizes LGBTQ issues, humanizes LGBTQ lives and ensures our community is represented at the tables of power. Our LGBTQ state and local leaders are the ones who block anti-LGBTQ legislation and propose pro-equality bills - and knowing that their ranks are growing is cause for hope.

And the final reason? State and local legislators go on to do amazing things (when they're not doing great work in their current jobs!). You've probably heard of these two amazing people who got their start in state and local government: U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and former President Barack Obama. Looking at this map, I know the next Tammy Baldwin and the next Barack Obama are out there. And they're just getting started.
