He was resting peacefully beneath a tree when a group of men spotted him. Moments later, they opened fire, shooting the terrified captive-bred lion repeatedly until he dropped—laughing as they watched him bleed to death.
Cruel, cowardly trophy hunters can pay tens of thousands of dollars to shoot and kill animals like this lion—condemning them to a painful and violent death—all for a grisly "trophy" to hang on their wall.
Trophy hunters pay absurd sums of money for the sick thrill of killing an animal. They shoot animals who are minding their own business, usually at close range, surrounded by "guides" who have led them to the exact spot where an animal is resting. Many lions and other animals killed by these hunters are captive-bred, meaning they're habituated to trusting humans—and easy targets.
Just as serial killers collect "trophies" from their victims, these hunters pay exorbitant sums to have the heads, tails, and skin of animals they kill preserved and shipped back home for them to display to others who share their lack of compassion.
That's why PETA is campaigning hard to push companies like UPS to ban the shipment of hunting trophies. UPS has already banned the transport of shark fins, ivory, and certain live animals—and if we keep up the pressure, we can persuade it to ban other body parts, too.
