Dear John,

Our recent elections have disappointed many—and left many questions that need to be answered.

I once read a blog post where a pastor who happens to be a major leader in the body of Christ said God controlled who won elections. He was talking to businessman Donald Trump back in 2015 and told him that he believed the Lord was going to make him the next president. Trump asked him, “Do you believe God made Obama president?” And the pastor replied that he did.

This pastor went on to say that the Lord is the One who controls elections and puts in leaders as He sees fit. I couldn’t disagree more. This is an egregious misapplication of the sovereignty of God.

The True Nature of God

The Lord does not put people in office who want to expand the killing of babies even after they are born. The Lord is not the One who places politicians in office who promote the LGBTQ agenda. He is not the One wanting this nation to move away from our Christian foundation to socialism and godless communism.

Hosea 8:4 says, “They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not.” That’s about as clear as you can make it. The Lord doesn’t control elections. Elections are the result of the worldview of people. Our recent elections gave an insight into what the majority of Americans believe, and it’s not pretty.

I believe this extreme sovereignty of God teaching (“If God’s in charge, then why do we need to fight?”) has been the source of much apathy in the body of Christ. That’s hurting us and the world we live in—and the world needs us to be the salt and light that the Lord called us to be.
