OCA-GLA Applauds Appointment of Bryant Y. Yang to Los Angeles County Superior Court

LOS ANGELES – OCA-GLA, the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of OCA, a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), applauds the appointment of OCA-GLA member Bryant Y. Yang as judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Among 19 California Superior Court judges recently named by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Yang is the first Burmese American to serve as a judge in the United States. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Yvonne T. Sanchez.

“The OCA-GLA family is proud when one of our members is recognized for their intellect, service and dedication for such a distinguished honor," stated Chapter President Albert Lu. “Congratulations to Judge Yang on a well-deserved appointment.”

Prior to his appointment, Yang served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California since 2016. He also served as a Law Clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit from 2011 to 2012 and at the U.S. District Court, Central District of California from 2010 to 2011.

Yang earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law in 2007. Between 2007 to 2010, Yang was an Associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP before serving as Special Prosecutor at the Burbank City Attorney's Office and as Special Counsel at the Glendale City's Attorney Office in 2010. Between 2012 to 2016, Yang was an associate at Irell & Mandella LLP.

In addition to practicing law, Yang was a Lecturer and Adjunct Professor at Harvey Mudd College in 2009, 2015 and 2020.

Yang’s involvement with OCA-GLA began as a high school student, when he volunteered with the chapter as an intern. Upon graduating from UC Berkeley with his undergraduate and law degrees, he returned to Los Angeles and promptly joined OCA-GLA’s Board of Directors as Secretary. After his exemplary service on OCA-GLA’s Executive Committee, Yang was elected to serve as OCA-GLA President from 2010-2012. He also served as the chapter's representative on OCA’s National Board.

Yang also created OCA-GLA’s Mentored Path to Citizenship (“MPTC”) program, which supports low-income applicants for U.S. citizenship by subsidizing their application fees in full and providing them with legal resources from Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles (AAAJ-LA) to help complete and submit their applications.

“Having the bench reflect the makeup of the community allows the court to be truly equitable,” said Sharon M. Wong, OCA National President. “Bryant Yang will continue to serve as a role model to young AAPIs through his new role. On behalf of the entire OCA family, congratulations to Judge Yang."
