John,
When President-elect Biden takes office in January, his administration will be met with many challenges. Among the immediate concerns is restoring a strong, representative democracy, and tackling the weaknesses in our system that President Trump has exposed. The first step to repairing our democracy is to pass the For the People Act.
Also known as H.R. 1, this bold set of reforms would expand voter protections, strengthen anti-corruption laws and limit the influence of money in politics. By putting an end to gerrymandering with nonpartisan redistricting, fighting voter discrimination and exposing sources of dark money in our elections, H.R. 1 can make our democracy more inclusive and representative of the American people. It would close loopholes and apply ethics laws to the president and vice president and keep future administrations from abusing and profiting off their power, as we’ve seen in countless instances from President Trump over the past four years.
But while the For the People Act passed the House of Representatives in March of last year, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to bring it up for a vote in the Senate. The American people need the next administration and Congress to transform our political system into one that serves more than the wealthy and corporate interests—we need a democracy that actually responds to peoples’ needs. Congress needs to pass the For the People Act—tell Congress to act by signing now.
A vote on H.R. 1 can transform our democracy for the benefit of the American people. Join CREW and 17 other organizations committed to reforming democracy, and sign the petition to urge Congress to pass H.R. 1 today.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
