The last two weeks have been a whirlwind. This weekend I finally got some time to read and reflect on this moment and I wanted to share some of my takeaways:

First off, our organizing worked and we should be incredibly proud. We made Trump the only sitting President in my lifetime to lose re-election. That’s huge. That happened because of people like you giving a few hours or a few dollars here and there for the past 4 years to get us to this point. We’ve got to keep up this momentum as we enter the Biden era.

Two, Joe Biden has an unmistakable climate mandate. His closing message was about climate. The media is covering his every move on climate, unlike any other time in American political history. As he’s staffing his Cabinet and administration, we have a critical window of opportunity to make sure he builds an administration ready to tackle this crisis, not filled with fossil fuel lobbyists.

Three, there’s a lot riding on Georgia. On January 5th, Georgians will decide which party controls the Senate. We need to win both these Senate seats to end McConnell’s reign as Majority leader, or it’s going to make the path to the Green New Deal—not to mention the COVID relief millions still need—a lot harder. These are uphill battles against well-funded incumbents but, with the stakes this high, we’ve got to throw down.

Four, we beat Trump but the forces behind him remain strong. Almost half the country supported this man and many continue to support his manipulative attempts to cast doubt on the election results. Democrats also lost multiple seats in the House to opponents who embody Trumpian values. Clearly, there’s still a lot of work to be done to change hearts and minds toward transforming our democracy to one that works for all of us.
