The DACA fight continues

Over the weekend, a federal court ruled that the Trump administration’s latest attempt to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was invalid because Chad Wolf was not lawfully appointed as acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. This case is moving quickly and we're closely following it. When we have more information, we'll be posting guidance and updates about what this decision means for immigrant youth on our website at immigrantjustice.org/DACA.

IN THE NEWS: Young immigrants and DACAmented youth continue to be resilient and fight for their future, even as the Trump administration is committed to shutting them out of protections and ending DACA. NIJC's Vanessa Esparza-Lopez spoke to The Chicago Sun-Times.

A transformative vision for a welcoming and compassionate migration policy

In many ways, the U.S. immigration system was built to keep out and punish immigrants. But it doesn't have to be this way. We envision migration policies that actually reflect American values and are grounded in racial justice, religious freedom, family unity, and community wholeness. NIJC compiled 10 principles that are foundational for a welcoming and compassionate immigration system that provides equal access to justice and protection for all. This is the system we'll keep fighting for. No matter what. Read more.

Know your rights about expedited removal

The Trump administration announced it would implement a policy expanding "expedited removal," which allows people to be deported quickly without ever getting a chance to appear before an immigration judge. Here's information to help you protect yourself and defend your rights.

Thank you to everyone who participated and raised more than $40,000 to provide life-changing legal services to immigrants and asylum seekers! Check out our blog for highlights from racers who posted on social media.

Toy drive for children of detained parents

Johannes Favi, an NIJC client, started a fundraiser to help families with a loved one detained in local jails buy holiday gifts for their children. Last Christmas, Johannes was locked up in immigration jail, leaving his wife as the sole caretaker of their three children, and they couldn't afford to buy gifts for their kids. Johannes was released and is grateful to be spending the holidays with his family this year, but he is asking others to contribute what they can to ensure that the children of detained immigrants don’t go without presents this holiday season. Donate to the toy drive fundraiser now!
