Dear Reader,
When 2020 began, no one could have predicted the enormous upheaval and devastation that would follow.
From the pandemic to the contested presidential election, from civil unrest to wildfires fueled by climate change, this year has been unsparing. And yet, one thing is certain: the hunger for news, particularly education news, is stronger than ever before.
That’s why the work we do here at The Hechinger Report — the reporting, the story-telling, the data investigations — is all so essential. The tiny details and big picture analysis we fold into each story can take weeks, sometimes months, of careful research, in-person interviews, school visits and data collection. The work is fulfilling and important, but it is not free. And it is more challenging than ever with pandemic restrictions grounding many of us.
As a nonprofit news organization, we rely on member donations to allow us to do the expansive reporting on early childhood, K-12 and higher education that our readers have come to expect. In fact, our budget now depends on your support — this year we need to raise $70,000 from readers like you.
That’s why we’re thrilled to share an opportunity to double your donation. We have once again been selected to participate in NewsMatch, a national matching-gift campaign that boosts donations to nonprofit newsrooms (like ours) around the country. Since 2016, NewsMatch has raised over $100 million for nonprofit journalism. That funds a lot of stories and drives a great deal of impact. So here’s how it works:
Starting now — through December 31 — NewsMatch will match your NEW monthly donation up to the full year amount (that’s 12x) or double your one-time gift, all up to $5,000.
This funding will help ensure we continue to produce the high-quality, independent education journalism you’ve come to depend on, especially this year. With the future of education so uncertain, the ability to share clear and informative news about the state of our schools and the health of our students and families is more important than ever.
The time is now.
Trusted journalism like ours has never mattered more.
