For scores of people across this country, Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory brought one simple response: relief.
This administration has horrendously weaponized the U.S. immigration system -- gutting DACA, trapping hundreds of thousands of young adults in legal jeopardy in the only country most of them have ever known, separating families, throwing children in cages, and destroying the asylum program, putting legions of families in harm’s way.
On January 20, 2021, much of Trump’s legacy comes to an end. The Texas Tribune reports that Biden could reinstate DACA “to its full force” with just an executive order. And it’s also relatively simple work to reverse Trump’s racist travel bans against the citizens of majority-Muslim nations, and to stop ICE from terrorizing immigrants with inhumane raids across the country.
Don’t get us wrong. These actions are both welcome and urgent -- we simply must restore humanity to this country’s immigration policy.
But there’s so much more that must be done -- and with a divided Congress, meaningful work to fix the broken situation on our southern border is likely to die on Mitch McConnell’s doorstep. Systems like the Migrant Protection Protocols, which have forced more than 67,000 asylum-seekers back to Mexico as they await judgement, need to be dismantled. That’s not to mention the huge roadblocks to achieving permanent legal status and a path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented people in the U.S.
It's not up for debate -- we cannot afford to let immigration reform stall for any longer. Millions of lives are at stake. We need your support right now to ensure the Biden-Harris administration has the support in Congress they need to get this work done.
