New Pilot Program Modeled After my DRIVE-Safe Act
Last week, I led a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation in support of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) proposed pilot program modeled after my Developing Responsible Individuals for a Vibrant Economy (DRIVE-Safe) Act. My DRIVE-Safe Act would establish an apprenticeship program that would allow for the legal operation of commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce by commercial driver’s license holders under the age of 21. Today, 49 states and the District of Columbia allow commercial drivers under the age of 21 to operate in intrastate commerce.
The robust training regimen established by this new pilot program goes far beyond what is currently required for 18-to-20-year-old commercial driver’s license holders. This will not only set the stage for improving safety on our roads, but will also create career opportunities, and lead to a highly trained, talented, and safety-focused workforce across the industry.
Honoring our Veterans
In the Marine Corps, our motto is Semper Fidelis, it means always faithful. Always faithful to our nation, and to the brave patriots who for years have served it. On Veterans Day, we paused to thank those veterans for their courage and for their dedication to protect our freedoms and to preserve our way of life. Their service should be an example to all of us. They help keep us safe during times of uncertainty and during times of peace. So thank you, veterans. Thank you to your families. Might we all learn from your example. And might you inspire the next generation to continue to serve. God bless you and may God continue to bless America.
