John,
Over the weekend, I visited El Paso, Texas, where Steve King loves to visit. Instead of talking about low commodity prices, the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs, or wage stagnation, he’s drinking out of a toilet-fountain to prove that conditions at border facilities are acceptable. He’s complaining about immigrants and wrongly using them as a scapegoat for the problems our nation is facing.
I went to the border to find out the truth, and learned from Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, who represents the district. Check out our Medium page to read my full reflection for yourself.
The truth is that both Iowa and our country have a long history of welcoming immigrants. No better example is when the late Republican Governor Robert Ray offered Tai Dam political refugees from Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Cambodia, and Thailand a home in Iowa. We rely on immigrants to support and grow our economy, and for their invaluable contributions to the political, social, and cultural fabric of our country.
Our immigration system should match who we are: it should reflect our values and our founding, and enable our country to reach its greatest economic heights.
Let’s live up to our ideals together,
