We're 13 days out from Election Day. Here's the news that you'll want to know:
Important read: what's happening with election lawsuits in six critical battleground states. "Even as states kept counting ballots, no state had certified results, and lawsuits began to work their way through the courts, major media outlets announced four days after Election Day that the former vice president had won the presidency by exceeding the necessary 270 electoral votes. Biden now leads by varying margins in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, and Wisconsin, most of which had showed Trump ahead on election night." (Daily Signal)
Among the highlights:
• Pennsylvania: President Trump's legal challenges "cumulatively could whittle Biden’s lead to 0.5%–triggering an automatic recount under Pennsylvania law."
• Michigan: Among the pending cases, one "calls for scrapping ballots cast in Wayne, Washtenaw, and Ingham counties. That reportedly would amount to 1.2 million votes." Right now, Joe Biden has a lead of approximately 147,000 votes.
• Arizona: Arizona's Republican Attorney General said "correcting the irregularity likely would affect only 200 votes. 'There is no evidence, there are no facts that would lead anyone to believe that the election results will change,' he said."
• Georgia: The state has gone to a full by-hand recount (see more below in The Vote).
Georgia's hand recount of the presidential race is moving quickly. Must be finished by Wednesday. "Elections officers in Fulton, Georgia’s most populous county, finished recounting votes shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday. DeKalb County was almost done. Gwinnett County expected to cross the finish line Monday. Cobb County still needed to recount some votes. Counties in other parts of the state also reported progress." (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) • Last week, Georgia announced a by-hand recount of the presidential race. That's because the state is very close: President Trump and Joe Biden are separated by approximately 14,000 votes out of nearly 5 million cast, and the Associated Press hasn't yet called the race.
• The recount is reportedly going well and with "few hiccups." Although some counties have completed their counts already, the final results will be released all at once, with all counties and the final statewide vote total included.
• County recounts have been overseen by poll monitors from both major parties, the press, and some members of the public.
• The recount must be done by midnight this Wednesday. The deadline for the state to certify its election results is this Friday.
• Georgia awards 16 Electoral College votes.
President Trump's Operation Warp Speed results in 94.5% effective COVID vaccine announced today. "Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna, thanked the U.S. federal government for its role in assisting the company, saying that Operation Warp Speed was 'instrumental to accelerating our progress to this point.'" (Daily Wire) • There's more good news in President Trump's fight against COVID, as a second highly effective vaccine was announced this morning. The vaccine from Moderna is reportedly 94.5% effective.
• The Trump Administration's Operation Warp Speed gave Moderna a $1.5 billion contract this summer. Right now, the company has said it's on track to deliver 20 million vaccine doses by the end of this year and between 500 million and 1 billion next year.
• President Trump tweeted this morning: "Another Vaccine just announced. This time by Moderna, 95% effective. For those great “historians”, please remember that these great discoveries, which will end the China Plague, all took place on my watch!"
