If our government is going to address the enormous challenges we face, we must have a working democracy.

It’s as simple as that.

If we continue to let Walmart, Pfizer, Jeff Bezos and Sheldon Adelson have the run of the place, they will.

That’s why President-Elect Biden must urge Congress to pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1) as a first priority in his administration.

Urge Biden to insist Democracy is a Day One issue.

The For the People Act is the most transformative pro-democracy legislation since the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Overwhelming majorities of the American people favor far-reaching measures to expand Social Security, raise the minimum wage, slash drug prices, make health care a right, address the climate crisis, break up Big Banks, control Big Tech and much more.

But we don’t get the policies we want because our democracy is broken.

• Corporations and the superrich dominate our politics.
   
• Even in high-turnout elections, voter suppression is widespread.
   
• Gerrymandered districts skew representation away from the will of the people.

The For the People Act would give us small donor-driven, publicly funded elections; automatic voter registration; an end to gerrymandering; and much more.

We desperately need democracy reform to make our government work For the People.

The crises we face are too urgent to wait.

And we now know that if we don’t have working democracy and government that works for people, we risk a descent into fascism.

Urge President-Elect Biden to tell Congress to pass the For the People Act as a first order of business in the new administration.
