Hi John,
Today the UK Government just announced the list of sponsors for next
year’s UN climate talks. Surprise, surprise - one of them is the owner and
operator of Scotland's most polluting power plant. [ [link removed] ]
[1]There’s no room for polluters at the UN climate talks - please sign!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In November next year COP26, the UN climate talks, will be held in Glasgow
- a critical moment for global leaders to make decisions to protect our
future.
Every year, big companies sponsor the climate talks and the UK government
have stated recently that they want the companies sponsoring COP26 to be
"driving positive change and innovation towards a lower carbon world". [ [link removed] ]
But today it’s been revealed that big fossil fuel companies like BP and
Shell are trying to get their logos in the picture. What’s even worse is
that it looks like the summit organisers are seriously considering it. [ [link removed] ]
[2]Tell Alok Sharma, President of COP26, that big polluters have no place
at the climate talks.
Fossil fuel companies are desperate to look like they’re part of the
solution and they know how to say the right things.
But we know that BP’s own ‘net zero’ announcement contains some huge
loopholes [ [link removed] ] and they continue to be one of the world’s biggest fossil
fuel producers, openly admitting that they want to still be extracting oil
and gas in 2050. Shell and Equinor’s climate plans are even weaker.
COP26 will lose all credibility if it is sponsored by any of the companies
or banks that are driving the climate crisis, especially those who are
seeking to dress up their destruction with inadequate targets and false
solutions.
Fossil fuel companies are climate criminals. BP and Shell are responsible
for human rights violations and climate impacts across the globe and they
have no place in the talks. If a company is currently a major polluter,
then it should not be allowed to buy credibility by sponsoring the
negotiations.
We have a short window of time to act before the sponsors are selected.
Let’s make sure the government knows that polluters have no place in
Glasgow.
