We at CCAN are excited to introduce you to our new Federal and Maryland Policy Director, Jamie DeMarco! Jamie will be leading us to future legislative victories on Capitol Hill and in Annapolis. And we'd love for you to hear from him directly in this wide-ranging and remarkable audio interview.

Jamie is a longtime friend of CCAN and stellar activist. Before joining us full-time, Jamie worked closely with us to pass the Maryland Clean Energy Jobs Act as campaign manager for the Maryland Clean Energy Jobs Initiative. He also worked with Citizens Climate Lobby lobbying for carbon price legislation in Maryland and nationwide. And he actually got his start as an advocate interning at CCAN years ago!

Jamie graduated from Warren Wilson College where he led a successful divestment campaign, and helped close the Asheville coal plant. Jamie grew up in Baltimore and now lives in College Park with his girlfriend and their dog, Mila.

“I did grow up in Baltimore, and I had a lot of friends who had asthma who grew up like in the shadow of the incinerator, and I never made those connections as a child. It [was] just like, oh, all those friends of mine have asthma, I guess they can’t run in gym class as much. But a lot has become more clear to me as a grown up...

And I think the most important thing is, if someone has experienced oppression that you have not experienced, the most that you can say to that person, in that moment, is I believe you. I cannot fully understand what you have experienced. But I’m not going to challenge it or argue with it, I believe you.”
