The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a national treasure. The largest national
wildlife refuge in our country, its 19.6 million acres are pristine habitat for
iconic polar bears, grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou, eagles, and more.
Over 200 species of birds spend their summers in Refuge breeding grounds, before
migrating to parts of all 50 states each fall. Another great migrator -- the
iconic Porcupine Caribou -- relies on the Refuge during their migration, and as
a calving ground to raise their young.

The Arctic Refuge is also home to Indigenous communities, as it has been for
thousands of years. The Gwi’chin and Inupiaq people continue to rely on this
land, and the wildlife it sustains.

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge will cause irreversible damage to the fragile
Arctic ecosystem and the communities that inhabit it -- unless we stop it.

Refuge home -- including the polar bear.

Polar bears are already struggling. As the sea ice vanishes due to climate
change, polar bears are drowning and starving to death.

The proposed oil exploration could kill or injure denning mothers and cubs
outright, and would disrupt their ability to find food, sleep, and raise their
young.

This particular population of polar bears, known as The Southern Beaufort Sea
population, has already declined by 40 percent in recent years. They are among
the most threatened animals in the world.

As the ice melts away, polar bear mothers are increasingly going on land, to the
coastal plain, to build their dens -- where they are particularly vulnerable to
disturbance while denning. Disturbances like 90,000-pound vehicles conducting
seismic testing in a grid pattern across their habitat, paving the way for oil
extraction that would destroy their habitat forever.

If the Trump Administration gets away with this move, it could mean the end of
the Southern Beaufort Sea polar bears.

We must stop this disastrous attack on the Arctic Refuge and give polar bears a

Indigenous people, threatens iconic wildlife like threatened polar bears, and
locks in catastrophic global climate change impacts in one of the most sensitive
and vulnerable ecosystems in the world.

Here’s what Friends of the Earth is doing to protect the Arctic Refuge:

* We’re fighting this Arctic drilling plan every step of the way -- We’ve
pressured the Department of the Interior to abandon it, built support for
House Representative Jared Huffman’s bill to stop it, and demanded that oil
companies refuse to drill in this fragile ecosystem.
* We’ve filed a lawsuit to block the leasing program completely and stop all
new attempts at drilling in the Arctic Refuge.
* We will oppose every single lease sale, one by one, as the Department of the
Interior starts auctioning off the land.
* Beyond the Arctic Refuge, we’re working to stop polluters from destroying the
whole region. This fall, thanks to years of strategic campaigning by Friends
of the Earth, allies, and members like you, the Army Corps rejected the
Pebble Mine project in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The EPA could still approve the
project -- so we’re not giving up the fight yet.
