Cultural Survival is honored to expand our leadership team and announce our new Director of Strategic Partnerships and Communications, Daisee Francour. Daisee is Haudenosaunee and an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin with relations to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy in upstate New York and Canada.

Daisee comes to Cultural Survival with over a decade of experience working in philanthropy, at non-profit organizations, in grassroots organizing, and as a direct service provider in education, mental health, corrections, serving Indigenous Peoples with disabilities/special needs, domestic violence victims, the homeless, and formerly incarcerated inmates. Her experience has deepened her advocacy and movement-building work as a radical woman in philanthropy. As a former program officer at the Christensen Fund, she managed the San Francisco Bay Area program and supported her colleagues with other global regional programs at the fund. Later, she transitioned into consulting as a strategist, resource mobilizer, organizational development consultant, and philanthropic advisor supporting Indigenous organizations locally and globally. Her work centers to empower Tribes, Native Nations, as well as Indigenous-led institutions to build their capacity, leadership, organizational infrastructure, and
develop holistic strategies to support their resource generation and organizational sustainability. As an Indigenous fundraiser, philanthropic advisor, and donor educator, Daisee strives to build the capacity of philanthropy, foundations, and individual donors by transforming their understanding of Indigenous rights, Indigenous issues, biocultural diversity, climate and social justice as well as other regenerative systems. Daisee holds a Master’s in Public Policy and Administration from Adler University in Chicago, Illinois and a Bachelors in Sociology and Criminal Justice from University of Wisconsin, Parkside.

Daisee is excited to join our team and goes on to share, "Cultural Survival has been on my radar for many years and I have deeply admired the work it does to empower Indigenous communities in a variety of capacities via multiple layers of intentional and holistic support. Joining an organization with a 48 year old legacy is exciting — to co-create a holistic vision and implement it alongside other incredible Indigenous women, men and allies is a privilege! I feel that for the first time, I have found my home outside of home, and I know my ancestors are behind me in this new journey. I am so honored to join Cultural Survival and their resilient team to bring my experience, love, and passion for Indigenous rights and decolonized/Indigenized systems to this community. In ukwehuwehneha, the Oneida language we say, ‘ʌkahake kalihwiyose’ which means ‘good things are ahead’.”

Galina Angarova (Buryat), Cultural Survival Executive Director shares, “I am thrilled to welcome Daisee to our Cultural Survival family and be together in this journey of protecting Indigenous Peoples rights and cultures, creating and maintaining authentic and reciprocal partnerships with communities, funders, and organizations, promoting Indigeous women’s leadership and decolonizing and re-indigenizing our ways within the colonial context. Daisee has been a powerful voice in the Indigenous Peoples’ movement and in philanthropy, and we are very lucky to have her as part of our team.” We look forward to the leadership and experience Daisee will bring to the organization and the ways she will continue to center Indigenous narratives, storytelling and place-based solutions in advocating for Indigenous rights.

Daisee has written two previous articles for Cultural Survival, including “Acts of Solidarity on Indigenous Peoples Day and Beyond ([link removed]) and “Indigenizing Philanthropy ([link removed]) .” Building off her first Indigenizing Philanthropy article published in June 2019, Cultural Survival is launching a new Indigenizing Philanthropy series where Galina Angarova and Daisee Francour share how Indigenous values and ways of being can transform philanthropy via three new articles, a toolkit and webinar. Galina and Daisee were both former program officers of private foundations and their dynamic expertise sheds an important light on how philanthropy can take a serious, introspective look at its colonial roots and take authentic actions to remedy its future.
