John,
Right now, we face a public health crisis in prisons and jails. Anti-Black
police violence in our communities. And a rising death toll from the
pandemic. These issues demand immediate solutions — and we simply can't
afford to wait until Inauguration Day.
But I will say this, John. We are in this together.
These are the issue areas, Color of Change is prioritizing in our
campaigns:
* We are working to reduce prison, jail, and detention populations.
First, we’re calling on prosecutors to detain fewer people before
their triall. Second, we are organizing court watches to hold
prosecutors and judges accountable for delayed hearings and aggressive
sentencing. Third, we are demanding that Governors use all of their
available powers to release people from jails, and prisons, and
detention centers— and wherever possible, to create new emergency
mechanisms to reduce incarcerated populations.
* We are fighting to get our incarcerated loved ones paid. Last month we
launched a mutual aid campaign to help incarcerated individuals apply
for their stimulus check. In partnership with Sister Warriors Freedom
Coalition, we sent over 800 IRS forms, envelopes, and stamps to women
behind bars in California prisons. But we aren’t stopping there, we're
launching a nationwide initiative to help families with incarcerated
loved ones in state and federal prison, file a claim and get paid.
But we need your support and it's going to take everything we have to make
sure these campaigns have the resources to succeed.
