Even though Joe Biden won the national popular vote by over 5 million votes, the country held its breath for 5 days while the winner remained unsettled. Finally, 46,143 votes from Arizona, Wisconsin and Georgia gave Biden the 270 electoral votes necessary to win the Presidency.

It is dangerous to leave the choice of the President to the fluke of a few thousand votes in three closely divided states. The current state-by-state winner-take-all method of awarding electoral votes inevitably creates uncertainty, recounts, lawsuits, and chaos.

Chris Hayes said it well:

Fortunately, we can create a national popular vote for President in time for the 2024 election. In a nationwide presidential election, every vote would be equal; candidates would have reason to address the concerns of voters in all 50 states; and the winner would always be the candidate getting the most popular votes.

Please email your legislators asking them to pass the National Popular Vote bill, which would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
