Even though Joe Biden won the national popular vote by over 5 million votes, the country held its breath for 5 days while the winner remained unsettled. Finally, 46,143 votes from Arizona, Wisconsin and Georgia gave Biden the 270 electoral votes necessary to win the Presidency.
It is dangerous to leave the choice of the President to the fluke of a few thousand votes in three closely divided states. The current state-by-state winner-take-all method of awarding electoral votes inevitably creates uncertainty, recounts, lawsuits, and chaos.
