A few months ago, the Trump administration announced its plans to open up the irreplaceable Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska to oil and gas drilling. Now they’re gearing up to start dangerous seismic testing, which is the first step towards drilling for oil.
The Arctic is already experiencing some of the worst effects of climate chaos on the planet. Oil and gas drilling would further harm ANWR's water, wildlife and other sensitive resources that the Native Gwich’in people of the Arctic depend on.
The Arctic is something worth protecting, not selling to Big Oil & Gas! We will not let this stand. We are closely watching Trump and his enablers and we are ready to stop them!
Seismic surveys are conducted in order to provide hard data on how much oil exists in a given area. But the seismic blasts themselves can endanger wildlife species such as polar bears and caribou, and can leave lasting scars across millions of acres of fragile and valuable wilderness.
Because Big Oil & Gas can’t show that seismic testing is safe for wildlife, the Trump administration is trying to rush approval through the Department of Interior and cut the public out from voicing their opposition. This is just one of many of Trump’s last ditch efforts to undo years of hard work building vital protections for our communities and the planet— including preserving the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The next 67 days will be crucial and we know Trump is capable of everything. He will still do everything he can to finalize his agenda and that includes selling-off the Arctic to Big Oil & Gas.
John, public pressure works. It is public pressure that has kept oil and gas interests from drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for the past 20 years, and it is public pressure from the Gwich'in people and activists like you that will keep the Trump administration from allowing drilling in this pristine national treasure. Almost 15,000 Food & Water Action supporters have already taken action against this reckless and irresponsible decision, but we need to do more to save the Arctic from Trump and his Big Oil & Gas cronies. We can — and we will — stop them!
