Dear Friend,

Looking back at the past four years, I’m overwhelmed by how much work we’ve all managed to do together. With your crucial help, PEN America has mounted a vigorous defense of a free press, fought and educated against disinformation, helped countless writers and their allies combat online harassment, and celebrated literature as a force of connection, solace, and insight at a time of great pain and despair.

Now, as we look to move beyond the past four years, we confront a bracing new set of challenges.

HELP US CONTINUE THE FIGHT

It’s clear that President Trump has no intention of relaxing his assault on the truth. On the contrary, he’s intensified his lies about the credibility of our elections and our democracy. Even after he leaves office, our shared sense of truth, facts, and knowledge—vital to the healthy functioning of our society and nation—will continue to erode unless we act.

That is why we can't stop now

We must continue to pressure the social platforms to halt the spread of vitriol and disinformation. We need to defend journalism that reports facts, not propaganda. We have to defeat agents of racist hatred whose goal is to silence the voices we most need to hear. And we have to protect and celebrate those who risk their lives to tell the truth.

Our best hope of being able to move beyond the past four years lies in planning for these struggles now. We can’t do it without you. Please contribute what you can to PEN America. Support our work shielding truth and defending facts. Your voice and your support have been critical to our efforts of the past four years, and will be equally essential in their aftermath.

Sending good wishes,

Suzanne Nossel, PEN America
