John --

After threatening to use executive action or even postpone the census altogether, President Donald Trump announced that he is backing down from forcing the addition of a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. Census. Although this episode has been nothing short of chaotic, this is an important victory for our democratic institutions and norms.

The proposed citizenship question was discrimination, plain and simple. The Census is more than just some informative numbers about the people in our country. It impacts the allocation of seats in the House of Representatives for the next 10 years and the distribution of $675 billion in federal spending.

A study produced by the Republican political operative who was advocating for the addition of this question actually said it would benefit “Republicans and non-Hispanic whites.” Adding a citizenship question was a blatant, politically-motivated attempt to silence and disenfranchise communities of color, and I am relieved the question will not see the light of day in 2020.

But with the 2020 election looming, it’s more important than ever before that everyone gets counted, John. If you agree that we need a Census that is fair and accurate, please add your name next to mine.

Thank you,

Suzan
