Hi
When voters across the US took to the polls earlier this month, stories of grassroots activists from Maine to Nevada who helped turn the tide of this election flew under the mainstream media radar. But their work gives us signs of hope in an otherwise tough year.
Supporters of Earth Island Journal never miss out on these inspiring stories of grassroots movements because we always have our ears to the ground. As a nonprofit magazine, we don’t put up a paywall. We rely on the generous support of our readers like you.
We’re looking for just 50 new donors to give $15/month to our Green Journalism Fund to help us cover more of these stories as we head into 2021. Will you be one of these champions of environmental journalism?

These last four years have been difficult, to say the least. Across the world, environmental and social justice activists have fought to have their voices heard.
But they never gave up. And we didn’t give up on telling their stories either.
Despite the threat our dangerously warming climate poses, it’s inspiring to report on the everyday people accomplishing extraordinary things on behalf of our shared planet.
Take, for example, Chloe Maxmin, who ran for Maine’s State Senate on the promise of a Green New Deal — and won, unseating a two-term incumbent Republican. In 2013, Maxmin won a Brower Youth Award from Earth Island Institute, for her leadership within the environmental movement.
And that’s not all!
- Nevada voters amended the state constitution to pivot toward 50 percent renewables.
- Orange County, Florida overwhelmingly approved a “Right to Clean Water Initiative.”
- Colorado voters decided to reintroduce wolves to the state's Western Slope.
Many of these stories are underreported because mainstream newsrooms tend to prioritize other coverage, even in the face of intense climate change and declining biodiversity.
When you support the Green Journalism Fund, you support our unique brand of environmental journalism that is a key resource for environmental and social justice activists.
Whether you are able to chip in $10 or $100, any amount you can give helps cover the costs of brining you news about environmental movements around the world.
