Our next president must do more than replace Donald Trump in office. They must re-unite Americans around the values we share: freedom, compassion, diversity and hard work. They need to reinvigorate President Kennedy’s call for Americans to do what Washington won’t — to work collaboratively in service to transform the lives of our fellow Americans and people from around our planet in need.

Public service is more than a good idea, it’s good business: For every $1 invested, almost $4 is returned to the economy. President Trump has tried for years to gut public service programs, but under my plan, we’ll expand public service options: by 2025, our plan will empower 1,000,000 Americans to serve their communities — and 1,000,000 positions will be available every year afterward.

Through national public service, we can tackle many of the key challenges that face Americans every day — from climate change and food insecurity to homelessness and poverty. Our program will unleash an energetic corps to build a stronger nation.
