Transit Matters

Muni matters to the 750,000 daily Muni riders pre-COVID, and the 150,000 daily riders now. But public transit is in a very precarious place. You can make a concrete difference today to make sure it recovers, and returns better than ever - let's build a better future for access, opportunity, and sustainability.

We’ve been talking to riders like Chanel who depend on Muni to get to school, but it can take almost 2 hours to travel 6 miles. Riders like Laura, who can’t work night shifts as long as BART closes at 9:00 PM. Riders like Maurice who depend on the the 29 Sunset bus, pandemic or no. This Giving Tuesday, we're sharing these stories and more, to show how much transit matters.

"Public transit is important to me - I don't know what I'd do without it." - Chanel

"I can't work night shifts - I can't get home if BART only runs until 9:00." - Laura

"I rode the 29 for middle school. I ride that line most of all even today." - Maurice

We need to make sure that the fight for transit service is grounded in these riders' experiences. Engaging with transit riders takes dedicated staff. Making sure these stories get to decision-makers also takes dedicated staff.

So for Giving Tuesday - coming right up on December 1! - we have set a fundraising goal of $10,000 so we can keep doing this work and grow riders’ voices through 2021 and beyond.

Please also help us by sharing our posts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram with the #GivingTuesday and #TransitMatters hashtags. Help us spread the word, help us reach more people, help build the pro-transit movement at this historic moment. Together, we can do this.

Thanks for all your support,

Let's Talk Congestion Pricing - Tuesday 5:30pm

The County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) is developing plans for potentially charging cars to use our most congested downtown streets.

SFCTA staff are joining us to get your input and answer your questions.

Register for access

Congestion pricing has been done in other citiies around the world, and can reduce car traffic while increasing transit service and funding. Pre-COVID, San Francisco's downtown streets were at record congestion levels. Cars and buses were stuck in traffic and no one was going anywhere fast.

Can current transit service accommodate more riders - people choosing to leave their cars behind rather than pay the price to drive downtown? Can pricing be done equitably, and not overburden folks who don't have good alternatives to cars? Join us to talk about these issues and more!

Save the Date: The Future of Transit in San Francisco and Beyond
Evening of December 3

We are gathering a panel of local transit experts to talk about how we lay the foundation now for the future of public transit in San Francisco and the Bay Area. What are the constraints, what are the opportunities, what should be the core values?

This forum is part of a national dialog about the central role public transit needs to play in an equitable, accessible, sustainable recovery.

Stay tuned for more details!
