** It takes a spectacular kind of bureaucrat to ban sanitary single-use plastics, but it is even more spectacular in the middle of a pandemic.
------------------------------------------------------------
Toronto Sun ([link removed]) (11/10/20) column: "Plastic bags, stir sticks, straws, cutlery, six-pack rings and certain takeout containers — the six single-use plastic items that the Trudeau government is going to ban is a short list but the consequences of this policy will be long-lasting. On the surface, banning these items may seem like a small step, but the government’s proposal uses Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), which means plastics would be improperly classified as 'toxic' substances. Let that sink in. The plastics we’ve used for months to wrap our takeout food, have items safely shipped to our doorsteps, and provide a barrier between health-care workers and the COVID-19 virus through N95 masks are now, according to the Canadian government, going to appear on a list of toxic substances...It’s
also important to note that many alternatives to plastics have worse environmental impacts than those plastic products themselves. That can be for a number of reasons, including the weight of a product, which is an important factor when considering shipments of goods and the subsequent emissions, or the production and manufacturing of products themselves. Nonetheless, the government needs to slow down and conduct a more critical scientific assessment of the alternatives."

"Government intervention in energy markets often wastes taxpayer resources, encourages government dependence, distorts investment flows, and invites cronyism."

What really drives the Paris crowd crazy is that we pulled out of the shell game and we're still winning.

(9/39/20) reports: "U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions decreased in 2019 by 2.8%, or 150 million metric tons (MMmt) when compared with 2018. Changes in the electricity fuel mix were the most important factors, with coal-related CO2 emissions declining by 184 million metric tons (15%). This led to CO2 emissions declines in the residential and commercial sector of 99 MMmt because these sectors consume relatively large amounts of electricity. Compared to 2018, weather played a lesser role in the 2019 decrease because heating demand remained about the same as in 2018, while cooling requirements decreased by 5% compared with 2018. This analysis examines economic trends and changes in fuel mix that influence energy-related CO2 emissions in the United States. The CO2 emissions in this report are the result of fossil fuel combustion or their use in the petrochemical and related industries."
Rejoining the Paris agreement is stupid. But don't just take our word for it.

(11/12/20) column "President-elect Joe Biden has pledged to sign an executive order Jan. 20 — the day he is inaugurated — to return the U.S. to the Paris climate accords, an international agreement by nearly 200 countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce global warming. The next step for Biden is spending the massive sum of $1.7 trillion to achieve the reductions. Look, I’m not a climate change denier. I believe climate change is real. Any history buff does, if you’ve read Shakespeare or studied the early Viking travels, when the Atlantic was calmer. But the flood of climate change activism in foreign policy is scary and unrealistic. China is the world’s biggest carbon dioxide emitter, responsible for 29% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s double the U.S. percentage. If China won’t live up to its treaty regarding its treatment of Hong Kong, do you think Chinese leaders are keen on limiting the amount of carbon dioxide their nation emits?...OK, you go first, China
tells the world. It’s a meaningless pledge and sadly, it shows how toothless the Paris accords are."
First they came for the coal miners and I did not speak out...
