Prop 17 restored voting rights to 50,000 Californians!

Prop 17 was passed last week by millions of California voters (58.7% Yes!), restoring the right to vote to 50,000 Californians on parole and ensuring that all formerly incarcerated people in California can now vote. We want to share with you what that restoration means to those who can more fully participate in our shared democracy.

Below are the voices of six ARC community members who can now vote as a result of Prop 17's passage.

"My right to vote matters because as a returning citizen I work hard, abide by laws and pay taxes. It is important that my views, beliefs and philosophies be expressed in my right to vote for candidates, laws and policies that will shape the ways my city, state and country are run." - Salim A.

"The passage of Proposition 17 meant the world to me. I literally cried when I heard the news. My vote will finally count. I have felt disenfranchised my entire life. I finally have a say in this democracy. I will use my vote to reform the criminal justice system. " - Mark T.

"My message to CA voters who voted yes on Prop 17 is one of great gratitude. Thank you for exercising your right to vote and making it possible for individuals on parole to be able to do so, as well. For so long we’ve been silenced, but not anymore. We have the ability to make a difference in our communities, as well as in our country.” - Pamela T.

"Our democracy is stronger when it is inclusive of all its citizens. Thank you to the many voters who voted #YesOn17, for restoring our right to vote, and empowering us to take an active role in our democracy. Voting is our civic duty and for our country to perform optimally, the voice of every citizen deserves to and should be heard.” - Myles F.

"I believe the incarcerated population should be afforded the same rights as the rest of us “in the land of the free” (United States of America). It would contribute to our people feeling included in decisions being made, as every decision made by our government affects us all.” - Raeshone H.

"I’m not sure how it is going to feel the day I walk in to the booth and vote. I know one thing for sure. I will sit in that emotion and remember all the hard work Initiate Justice, ARC, Yes on Prop 17, #Cut50 and all the organizations and advocates did for me to have that moment." - Efrain O.
