Ambulance calls spike with COVID-19 surge

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in the spring, ambulance calls dropped as people avoided hospital visits, afraid of catching the virus, but this fall there’s been a sharp spike in these calls. A virtual meeting of the Hastings-Quinte Emergency Services Committee on Tuesday received a report from Chief of Paramedics Doug Socha.

Station #15 is located at 289 Woodside Dr. in Oakville, while Station #16 is at 6650 Fifth Line in Milton. Both will offer service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Staffing for an additional 12-hour shift is being requested through the 2021 city budget process, with another planned for 2022.

Langley man arrested after crashing car into ambulance

A 21-year-old Langley man was arrested on Monday morning after he apparently crashed his vehicle into an ambulance and ran from the scene. Police were called to the 400 block of 216 Street just after 1 a.m for a report of a crash between a BC Ambulance and a black Infiniti.

Six Nations Paramedic Services receive extra funding for COVID-19, flu shot projects

The Six Nations Paramedic Services have received additional funding to expand their staff due to COVID-19, and for other upcoming projects. "We were able to get the support of additional paramedics during our spike, which were very helpful in managing the contact tracing and the testing that was required," said Lori Davis Hill, Director of Six Nationals Health Services.

Public health officials say Montreal now facing opioid crisis

People who work with opioid users in Montreal say the city is well on its way to joining other parts of the country in seeing an overdose crisis. Benoit Garneau, spokesperson for Urgences-Santé, the ambulance service for Montreal and Laval, told CBC News that paramedics started to notice a steep rise in overdoses at the start of the summer.

Leamington councillor, former ambulance chief Jacobs dies at 80

John Jacobs, a Leamington councillor and longtime head of Sun Parlour Ambulance, died suddenly at his home Sunday night. Jacobs was in his third term on council, having first been elected in 2010. Mayor Hilda MacDonald said she and Jacobs clashed frequently but there was never any animosity.

Province planning "Heroes Fund" to help families of first responders who die on duty

Bill 47, Ensuring Safety and Cutting Red Tape, will allow Alberta’s government to follow through on its commitment to create the Heroes Fund. Alberta’s government will honour the sacrifices of first responders who die as a result of performing their duties. The Heroes Fund will provide a one-time tax-free payment of $100,000 to eligible families through the Workers’ Compensation Board.

Paramedics adopt blue epaulettes for men's health

Paramedics in the area are running a month-long campaign to help give back to those in need in the district, and supporting another good cause while they're at it. The Rainy River District Association of Professional Paramedics (RRAPP) have started an epaulette campaign for the month of November, an effort they've linked to another long-running fundraiser that traditionally takes place in the same month, according to paramedic Zach Green.
