Weekly transmissions from Adbusters, the journal of the mental environment

Hey Jammer,

You can’t always see aesthetics. But there it is . . . In the brutalist face of a bank building, cold as an autopsy table. In the way people look down when they walk along the streets. In the way the city exhales after dark. In the knack and smack of trolling the internet . . . and the angst of Christmas shopping.

Do we still have it? Can we invent new aesthetics, design sustainable products and rid our cities of waste . . . cultivate new sensibilities for our post-materialist age?

Our century will be a time of monumental ideological clashes, paradigm shifts and metamemetic insurgencies on multiple fronts. We artists and designers must be the vanguards, positioning ourselves at the forefront of every struggle and debate. Just as farmers are the keepers of land, we are the keepers of mindscape. We must nurture it and care for it and make sure there will always be wilderness, diversity and freedom there.

So, build a new aesthetics with us . . . for a future that computes. Check out our latest issue —

Want to dive deeper? Get your hands on all five issues — including The Big Ideas of 2025 — that we printed in 2020 . . . the Plague Year.

Stuck at home. Cut off from the physical world. Faced with a constant barrage of information and misinformation. Stuck between left and right, good and bad, life and death . . . a shouting match of sense-deafening volume. How best to cut through the noise? How to make sense of these weeks and months of world-historic turmoil? Is there anybody out there? Does anyone care?

We do. Except for one canceled issue, we haven't flinched. And at this critical juncture, we have a whole lot to say.

What happened? Where are we now? And where do we go from here? The Plague Year forced the questions, but it's up to us to provide the answers. From politics to aesthetics, the psychological to the spiritual, the economy to the environment, all facets of our lives are open to re-evaluation. We the People are the ultimate arbiters of power, the final authors of history.

What chapter comes next? We have a few ideas . . .
